"Tarot Cards - Relevant or Rubbish?"

Tarot Cards date back to the 15th century and have been used in a variety of ways. They are used to spot patterns, give advice and even predict the future of others. There are many ways to read tarot cards and different tarot card readers use completely different methods.

There is no right or wrong way and tarot card readers use whichever method works best for themselves. It is even possible to read tarot cards yourself but this is not the most effective way and it is always recommended to have a tarot card reader or 'Querent' as they are commonly known, to read the cards for you.
It takes years and years of practice and skill to correctly interpret tarot cards as it isn't just about which card is shown but also the way that the cards are spread out and the way the cards fall.

Tarot Card Decks come in a wide variety and they are far too numerous to mention them all but all card decks must have certain characteristics. All Tarot Card Decks consist of 78 Cards. These are divided into 2 parts. The Major Arcana consisting of 22 cards and the Minor Arcana consisting of 56 cards.

The Major Arcana Consisting of 22 cards the major arcana cards are the heartbeat of tarot cards and thought to date back to earlier times than the minor arcana cards. The meanings of the major cards are to be given the upmost respect and not to be disregarded. Most Major arcana cards are Archetypes. Archetypes are figures that are usually representative of a particular type of person. Examples of archetype major arcana cards are;

  • The Hermit
  • The Magician
  • The Fool
  • The Empress

The Minor Arcana All tarot card decks have 4 suits making up the 56 cards of the minor Arcana. The suits making this part of the tarot deck up are:

  • The suit of Wands.
  • The Suit of Cups.
  • The Suit of Swords.
  • The suit of Pentacles.

Each Minor arcana suit consists of 14 cards which in turn consist of Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings. These cards are then connected to different elements.

  • Pages cards = Earth Element
  • Knights cards = Fire Element
  • Queens cards = Water Element
  • Kings cards = Air Element

The meanings of the cards and your reading all depends on which cards are shown, how they are laid and which other cards they are in conjunction with.
